There was a great war between the elves and the dwarves. The dwarves thought that the elves were tampering with magic too much and were causing catastrophes around the world. Both sides suffered heavy losses and the war went on for decades. One day, an army of ghosts marched from the sunrise to meet the two opposing armies. It was comprised of the fallen forces of the two bitter enemies. At the sight both sides threw down their weapons and called a truce, seeing how much death they had caused. The day was declared a sacred holiday and is celebrated each year to remember the reason that peace must be kept. A council was also formed that contained elves and dwarves. Eventually gnomes and halflings were added as they began to establish larger cities for themselves. Around this time, the council decided to unite the races under one banner. A ruler was elected from the council, a dwarf, and they ruled for a century or so. The council continues to promote one of their own to the thrown, but never of the same race twice in a row. The current ruler is a female gnome, well respected and loved by her people.
